Termination of pregnancy
1. Big picture
Termination of pregnancy means the intentional ending of an ongoing pregnancy before fetal viability, by medical or surgical methods, within the limits of local law and clinical safety.
For the exam, you must think in a structured way:
Woman requests or needs pregnancy termination
↓
Confirm pregnancy and gestational age
↓
Confirm intrauterine location and viability if relevant
↓
Assess indication, consent, legal/protocol requirements
↓
Choose method according to gestational age and clinical situation
↓
Prevent complications: bleeding, infection, perforation, retained tissue, Rh sensitization
↓
Offer contraception and psychological support
The important clinical idea is: termination is a planned medical procedure, not simply “abortion.” It requires correct dating, counselling, infection prevention, Rh management, safe technique, and follow-up.
