Treatment of polyneuropathies
1. Big picture
Polyneuropathy means diffuse, usually symmetrical dysfunction of many peripheral nerves. Treatment is not “one drug for polyneuropathy.” The correct exam logic is:
First identify the pattern → find the cause → remove/treat the cause → treat pain and disability → prevent complications.
The lecture’s key message is very important: treatment depends on the cause of the neuropathy, and early diagnosis may improve prognosis. For example, diabetic neuropathy, alcoholic neuropathy, Guillain–Barré syndrome, chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy, uremic neuropathy, toxic neuropathy, and hereditary neuropathy are treated very differently.
